What Do You Do with Your Kids in Summer?

As a working parent we once were able to leave our son at home with his sister and grandmother. Then we no longer could trust his sister to stay or come back home if she left and had her in YMCA. This was costly. Now it is to the point that I cannot leave my son at home with his grandmother this summer because she would go out of her mind. I had to take out a loan just have my daughter attend the YMCA in the summer. The programs that I have come across want hundreds of dollars. I wish there was something for kids like mine to attend but did not cost so much. Makes me want to start up some program if I had the means, money, and knowledge to do so. Just wondering what plans do you all make for the summer for your kids while you are at work.

I think most of us struggle with this. My son has two married sisters that live in Texas. The problem is, he can stay with them for a little while, but they don't want to deal with his behavior issues. They are so good with him, and will tolerate some things, but bottom line is, they have very small children, and they've got their hands full. We can't afford those summer programs either. I really don't know what the answer is.

What about day programs from the Parks and Recreation Dep't or Boys and Girls Clubs?

The area in which I live does not have a Boys & Girls Club. Parks and Recreations only have things in the summer that is approximately about 4 hours a day. The lowest cost I have found so far is 125.00 a week.

Summer care for ADHD children of working moms can be a huge challenge. Here are some suggestions:

  • Contact all the churches in your community and ask if they have any suggestions
  • Contact your pastor and mention to brothers and sisters in your own church that you have a need, and do they have any suggestions
  • Pray for a family with a child younger than your son to place your son for the summer as a companion, older helper to the mom in that family. If your son knows that he is there to be a helper, he may behave differently. Many moms off young children would love to have an older boy play with one of their children.
  • Contact your local homeschooling organization and ask if there are any families that might have teens who could come to your own home. Sometimes these teens will work inexpensively as a ministry.
  • Most summer camp programs have scholarships and sliding scales. Ask about this.
  • Pray, pray and pray some more.
